The World turns GREEN to celebrate the Irish

18 Mar

This year’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities were accompanied by many green landmarks all over the world. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Paris’ famous Moulin Rouge illuminated by emerald green spotlights on Wednesday and Thursday evening (will we need to call it “Moulin Vert” now?!).

The whole initiative originally came from Tourism Ireland (the Irish Tourism Board) to promote Ireland as a tourist destination and I think they did a really good job.

Other famous and emblematic monuments that were bathed in green light include the Empire State Building in New York, the White House fountains in Washington D.C., the Sky Tower in Auckland, the  Table Mountain in Cape Town, Burj al Arab in Dubai, the London Eye, the Puerta de Alcala in Madrid and the CN Tower in Toronto…. not to forget the Chicago River being dyed green (well, actually every year)

Along with this “greenification”, other festivities included parades worldwide (USA, Canada, New-Zealand, Canari Islands, Russia, Spain etc.). And of course, people enjoyed the craic and conviviality of having a traditional pint of Guinness in an Irish Pub. On St Patrick’s Day Irish Pubs all over the World attract Irish and non-Irish people alike. Irish emigrants and their descendants around the world comprise a figure of roughly 70 million people!

I hope you all had a great time yesterday! I’m already looking forward to next year’s festivities!
